A Mountain Bike School in the beautiful South West of Western Australia
Roman Vock is a PMBIA and MTBA certified Level 1 Mountain Bike Coach. He has been riding Mountain bikes since his teenage years in the nineties, living in Perth. After his Chef apprenticeship Roman relocated to Arosa, Switzerland. Officially he went there to discover his roots and connect with his family… And of course to gain more cooking experience in a variety of restaurants and gourmet service.
But whoever knows Roman will understand that the main reasons were the fabulous possibilities in Mountain Biking. He loved his life in the mountains, just minutes away from the best trails you can imagine. He focused on downhill, dirt jump, north shore and trials. And found time for the occasional epic through the mountains of Graubünden #homeoftrails, while living in Arosa-Lenzerheide. In those days, coaching or opening a Mountain Bike School in Dunsborough was not in his plans, he just wanted to ride.
However, the season is short at that altitude as the winters are long. So the opportunity to visit other parks and regions were within his grasp, while he waited for the snow to melt.
European Bike Parks Roman went to experience:
- Champéry / Verbier / Portes du Soleil: World Cup DH circuit and an unbelievably huge Mountain Bike trail network connecting Switzerland and France
- Flumserberg: Home of René Wildhaber, a bike park in the Swiss state of St. Gallen in the Eastern part of Switzerland. With its ever-growing and added slopes and trails, surely soon one of the most fun parks in Switzerland.
- Leogang Saalfelden: Previously on the World Cup DH, a super fun bike park in Austria, home of Red Bull slope style
- Bischofsmais: One of the original and best bike parks in the Bavarian Part of Germany, near the Czechian Border
- Bad Wildbad: Yet another fun park to ride your heart out and previously on the World Cup DH circuit, situated in the South of Germany in the Black Forest Region.
After coming back to Australia, Roman found, with limited Downhill possibilities in the Dunsborough and Busselton Area, it made more sense to move focus towards X-Country, Enduro and Road Cycling. This shift nicely opened uptake door for the whole family to join in. Now we have a small family of bikes as well as kids.
Dunsborough Grassroots coaching courses
In 2015 he developed the idea to teach our own kids and a few of their friends some MTB Skills. The aim of the coaching was, to give them the skills and confidence to be able to keep up on family outings! The little course started to attract more and more children. Soon he worked with parent helpers and the courses started to shape up.
Early in those days he was able to get Andrew Spencer-Wright, Helen Baker and Jade Bergroth on board. Integrating the Grassroots Program into the Cape Mountain Bike Club was a logical step forward. Andrew volunteered as president, Roman as Secretary and Jade as Treasurer and things went on from there.
Several members of the Club attended coaching courses and the Grassroots Program turned slowly from its humble beginnings with 5 or 6 kids and a social sausage sizzle after each ride, to a total of 56 kids. The courses are offered with 2 different age groups in Dunsborough and 1 newly formed group in Busselton.
In his capacity as the instigator and coordinator of the Grassroots Program, Roman and his crew are volunteering many valuable hours. We feel it is important for this to be available to the kids. All the monies raised from this program, directly supports the Club. This Grassroots Program is offered to local school aged children during school terms, all year round. With an ever growing participation rate and most coaching courses running at full capacity, it is a true testament to Roman’s dedication and ability. (Check out some of their photos)
Young and older Adult coaching courses:
While running the Grassroots Program it became clear that not only little riders were interested in learning new skills. To close this gap we offer Group and Individual Skills Training Courses through our Dunsborough Mountain Bike School –
